I think there are a number of resident fish that stay up in the James River arm also. We usually always get a sow or two on opening night, even if they aren't running very good yet due to cold water.

We snag at night early in the season to avoid some of the traffic. Once April gets here and everybody starts moving on to other species of fish, we snag during the day and do great then too.

I just wish turkey season didn't have to coincide with the best part of snagging season. :embarassed:

The fish are still there even early in the season. On LOZ I know they usually catch them pretty well around the Coffmann/Ivy Bend area. If you have a good graph, I'd imagine you could run down river and graph some deep holes and find pods of fish. They snag spoonboll all winter long in Oklahoma on Grand Lake by marking them in deep water on there fish finders and trolling through them.

Ravenloft, I'll take you up on the asian carp contest some day. :smile2: Even if I lose, as long as I catch a bunch it's worth it!

Have you seen anybody pull a spoonbill out of the Mississippi below Alton Dam? I guess that's about the only place to snag from the bank this year around there since they don't allow snagging at Chain of Rocks this year.

Well I guess there is always a chance of hooking in to a spoonbill instead of a carp below Alton Dam. I will probably come down and give it a try anyhow atleast one day this spring.

Snagging season opens March 15 and runs till the end of April.

we are headed for Tablerock and the James River arm, but I like to wait for a while and the water warms and the traffic isn't there either and the fish ARE:wink:
I hear ya. We snag at night early in the season just to avoid a lot of your daytime weekend warriors. With season opening on a weekend this year, it might not matter a whole lot though. :embarassed: The mouth of Flat Creek will probably look like christmas lights.

There are some guides down there, but if you need any information on catching spoonbill on the James River, just shoot me a PM. Not to brag, but last year we limited out every trip out. The biggest we caught last year was only about 65 lbs, but we've caught them up to 82 lbs down there. My personal best is 74 lbs. The state record was pulled from the Cape Fair area in 2002 and weighed almost 140 lbs!

Let me know if you plan on going down and I'll make a map out for you and show you the spots that we hit the hardest and have had good luck at the past few years.

For you guys who plan on snagging at Chain of Rocks, I read in the Illinois forum that a guy called the conservation and they said it FOR SURE closed this year to snagging. They said that they want to protect the sturgeon in the area or something eventhough they are allowing regular fishing. That stinks because I had a blast snagging down there last year for them silly asian carp. :embarassed:

A 50+ is when you really get a fight on your hands. The biggest that I've caught was 74 lbs so I dont know how a 100 pounder would feel like. Spoonfish has caught a 102 pounder before so maybe he could enlighten us how the fight is from those century fish. :tounge_out:

This is sounding like it could be a lot of fun.

Looks like I am gonna have to find someone to show me the ropes.
I'll be making several trips down to the James River so my offer to take you still stands. If for some reason I don't head down there, we could always hit the lower Osage below Bagnell where the fish aren't nearly as big, but they taste the best IMO. There's a lot of asian carp in that area to that you snag into also.

I'm heading down there after work next Friday for opening night. I hadn't planned on taking my boat since my buddy and his dad had room in their boat, but if you were interested in going I could haul my boat down there also to make room. I planned on fishing Saturday morning till I got my limit and then go sleep in my buddies dad's RV or at my buddies dorm room depending on where he is staying and then coming home during the day on Saturday.

Let me know if you want to go along or if you would rather wait to go during the daylight sometime. I'm not sure when your spring break is, but I am off work Thursday - Tuesday of the second weekend of snagging season to and we had planned on going back down to the James during that time frame also.

Well that will work out better anyways. Snagging usually gets better once April gets here anyways. My buddy and I are planning on fishing a couple of the spoonbill tournaments up at LoZ this year which will be a first for both of us as we have always snagged the Lower Osage and the James River. Right now it's just the two of us going so if you wanted to go along for that, you're more than welcome also.

Cuz if your way aint broke then don't fix it.

I like using long 10-15' surf rods and big spinning reels myself, but a lot of people use smaller tackle and do great.

What's the biggest spoonbill that you have caught on the Mississippi down there? They get really big on Tablerock, LoZ, and Truman I know. Last year I managed to catch four of them at chain of rocks one day and the biggest was barely 24" from the fork of the tail to the eye. :eek:oooh:

Good luck Mr. Cuz. If you can't find them on the Mississippi, then you can bet that ol Spoonfish can tell you how to find them on Truman. :smile2: I'd like to meet up with him for a snagging trip myself one of these days.

8/0 Mustad Treble hooks (4 first one on the bottom then the other 3 the length of the pole apart)
20oz. Sinker
Ozark Snagger Rod 6'6" with a plunger on the but of it (crotch saver)
Wow that's a lot of lead!

My rigs:

Quantum Optix S60 Spinning Reel
80lbs test power pro
12' XH surf rod

Abu Garcia 6500
80lbs test power pro
10' Eagle Claw Water Eagle casting rod

Southbend Beach Comber Spinning Reel
80lbs test power pro

I've also got several "broomsticks" with Penn 209's that I haven't used in years. I might give them a try this year though just to see what a fish feels like on them again.

I started rippen up on the osage 2 years ago, been hooked ever since! This year it looks like I'll get most of my time in on weekdays, anyone interested in joining me through the week? I've got a boat, and thats how I've always snagged for them!

Are you referring to the Osage Arm of Truman, LOZ, or below Bagnell?

Owensville is about an hour East down 50 from Jefferson City.

I usually snag on the James River arm of Tablerock and the lower Osage River below Bagnell Dam.

I'd like to drive up to Schell Osage and do some bank snagging one of these days. I talk to a guy on another forum that does that and catches some good ones when they are running up there.
