I drove around the lake today, and the little platte ramp was still frozen, the other three in clay county were open, don't know about the ramp at plattsburg tho.. They have shut the water off again but I did see some guys fishing below the dam :cool2:

The little platte river is almost out of its banks where it enters into smithville. The free ramp is open, only ice I saw was in the back of some coves.Current is ripping by the ramp.Water is muddy enough to walk on.

Looks like the dam was ripping for a while also, but dropping back down now

I went to a farm pond last night and caught about 12 or 13 nice ones right before dark. It was nice getting out and wetting a line. I thought about running over yesterday but I did some chores around the house instead and charged batteries up on the boat. Did you fish around the docks or bidge pillers. I would suspect this will be a good spring over there if we have some decent weather.

If anyone knows when the water clears up around plattsburg please let me know. This is my favorite shad spot and if it is muddy it aint worth a darn. Hate to drive 45 minutes to find muddy water and no shad. Thanks in advance for the information!!

Thanks for the updates Cook, I have some minor boat maintence to do and get the NCAA tourney out of the way and i'll be back on the water. Have you ever gone up the river to or towards Plattsbugh to fish? I'm afraid of running over stumps so i don't go too far North.

Bruce, I have been up it to the bend before the bridge, You have to watch your depth and watch for trees real close. A couple of times I ran the trolling motor also.

From Plattsburg ramp its roughly 2.5 miles to the bridge of 256. That was with an 20 ft roughneck flat bottom, didn't much more than 2' to run.

in the spring some nice size crappie will move into the rivers and small streams, when the water is up you can catch some monsters in 2 ft of water, have you ever tried crappie fishing in the spring where your talking about, i might have to go check it out. I dont think i have ever fished there.

The river section north of the ramp gets a lot of action.White bass start their spawning run about the begining of april, then the shad run, followed by the crappie around may 1.
Its almost better to bank fish in the river, lots of places to park. The small iron bridge in plattsburg was washed out last year, road is closed.Makes a good spot to take the kids, also a good spot for cats after a heavy rain if there is a good current present. The cats will come up from the lake to feed on all the insects washed in or in the flooded trees/grass.

your not kidding, i went by the dam just before dark and they were let so much water you would need a 3lb weight to keep your bait from floating on top, once the water slows up a little i am deff going to be there, my buddie said he caught a few nice channels the other day there on fresh shad just behind where the ripples are all of them were about 5lbs. ( He tends to add on a pound or two when no one is with him) lol

Pontoon is now moored at Little Platte Marina! Put her in the slip yesterday. Not without incident. First my slip was occupied? With a quick phone call I took care of that. My first mate was to buisy texting her friends to get up and help guide the front of the boat into the slip. It's 10 feet wide and the boat is 8.5 feet wide. I knock the brand new cleat off left front corner. She was promptly tied to the yard arm whipped with a cat o nine tails and then keel hauled. Actually she was forgiven because I didn't ask her to get up and walk the front in. LOL! Plan on drifting the river channel this week maybe Thursday. I need some bait bad!
