when i was a kid (60s - 70's) in the dakotas and minnesota, frozen grocery store smelt were the go-to bait for northern pike in spring. good and oily. would fish a smelt on one line, and cast a daredevil with another. caught cats on them too. haven't seen any in years or i'd get some. for jigging pike thru the ice, sometimes we'd dye them green or red with food coloring. don't remember that it made a difference, but it was fun to try.

I have tried it, dig not get a sniff with it, have had success with Shad, there is a big run every year here on the Snake River, have not tried catchin it but seen lots of boats dancin below Ice Harbor dam putting one after the other in the boat, seen up to 10 lb shad pulled out of there.
