    Hi All,
I'm trying to develop a homemade bait, and knowing that Channels rely heavily on smell and taste to locate food, I'm thinking of adding some sort of "smelly" additive. I read a while back that Vanilla extract is good, but I just wondered if any of you guys have tried it, or even something else that may do the trick? I also believe they like sweet stuff too ???
So maybe sweet and smelly .... :smile2:
    Thanks
    Tony

I have never tried it but I have heard of people using Vanilla extract. Let us know how it works.

You can also use anise extract. I works good, and is potent. It don't take much.

Personally I would forget the sweet.
Think about what they eat naturally.
Doubt if there is anything sweet about dead or dying fish. They also eat dead animal matter.
So I would try rotten eggs.
Mixed with cheese they make a pretty good dip bait.
    best of luck

Tony, Before you trash your kitchen try some good o'l cut shad or gill as bait. If that don't work after 5 trips, Try another spot. If that still don't work use some of those "flavors" on your cut bait. I bet If you use cut bait and move around to find the fish, you won't need the "flavors".

I would use what they eat for bait.

I never use anything but live and cut bait, but I've heard that Strawberry kool-aid is a good additive for both carp and catfish. I guess if you leave anything in the water long enough something will eat it.

I agree you might want to try cherry kool-aid. It will work for carp and catfish alike. Always bring two different flavors in case one does not work. Take anise and add it to shrimp they love it.
