It's pretty much agreed upon here on the BOC that bullheads make great bait. How about very small channels? When bait fishin', we have caught many slightly bigger than aquarium size channels, (about 4 inches) but I haven't had a bite on one yet. I clip their "stingers" off, and they stay alive "forever", wiggling like an eel, but once again, I haven't had a bite on one yet. Would I be better off to use them as cut bait, or discard the practice altogether?

Maybe try them as cutbait Bill. Not sure why you're not getting any bites, but it could be the smell of them or the Cats are preferring different bait all together. Keep experimenting and hopefully the odds will be in your favor.

    Good luck on the fishing!!

Thanks for the replies. I just figured if one cat (bullhead) made a good bait, the channels should be fine too. I guess they could smell different. 'Course this time of year, cut bait seems to be better than ANY live bait around here. I'm gonna keep on experimenting. Was just curious to see if anyone else had had any luck using channels.

Bill, I tried small channels several times last summer and got no hits.

Throw a little spotted bass out there though and they will eat it up.

I tried this experiment a month ago as well, however I used a small channel as cut bait. Got a few bites, but not a hookup. What was interesting was that the best run I got was from the tail. I normally never fish with a tail, but thought I'd try it. I may have to try it again.
