I would say anything over #10 for a channel is good. I would consider a #20 and over a trophy channel. I consider anything over #20 for a blue as good. I consider anything over #50 as a trophy blue. Anything under #10 is small for a blue. I would guess the flatheads are about the same as the blues. I can't say much about the flatheads because where I fish I only catch blues and a few channels.

The answer is very dependent on where you fish. Here on the James River, no one gets excited about a blue cat until it hits at least 30 pounds. 50 pounders are common. Fun, mind you, but not unusual. I catch 20 pound flatheads on almost every trip. But I have fished places where a 20 pound fish on any type is unheard of.
