I live in Ohio and everyone around here calls a flat head a shovel head (including me). I am aware that they are called flat heads but was wondering if anyone else has heard of this. Maybe its a regional thing. The first time I went fishing with a BOC member, I got some ribbing for my 'term'.

Not many people around here use the term Shovelhead, but I have heard it. I think it's more of a southern used term for flatheads.

its a regional thing. go down to southern WVA and you will hear them called "Mud-cats". you say shovelhead or flathead in those parts and you will get a ribbing too:lol:

There is a aquatic catfish called a shovelhead, the pet store here sold em and i actually had one in my fish tank,
and it looks nothing like a flathead.

But yes ive heard of em being called shovel heads but no one calls em that here

Johnny Cats, Tabby Cat, Mississippi Cat, Appaloosa Cat etc., etc.

Heck, I like to call them by most all of their names.

Growing up here south of Zanesville everybody called em shovelheads. I call em flatheads now but when I say that to someone I meet here they give me that blank look, then I say shovelhead and the lights and sirens go off in their heads lol.

You've got that right, I'm surrounded by them. Thankfully, the BOC has shown me the light on that subject. I grew up best friends with a guy whose parents owned a p@ylake (that happened to be 1/2 mile away from my house).
