Would 40lb. big game be too large for it, or maybe try some 30lb.

For all my reels (including a 6500B Baitrunner) I use Power Pro with a diameter equal to the lowest line the reel shows a capacity for.

If I am using mono I usually use the highest pound test the reel has a rating for and no more (if I remember right, 30# would be what I would use on yours).

I also have a 4500B Baitrunner. Spooled it with 80 lb. PowerPro and am real happy with it. I would not hesitate to use it against almost anything out there but might be a bit nervouse if I hooked into a 65 lb. flathead among a bunch of dead trees and branches in a river. The rod would probably give out before the reel. Sure wish it came with a spare spool though. (The Okuma EB-80 came with a nice spare)

What would you guys recommend for a rod for this reel, do you think the ugly stik tiger is overkill for this reel, thanks for all the replies.

The Ugly Stik Tiger in M to MH would do great with that reel.

I use the 15' MH Ugly Stik surf rod with my 6500B.

There's no such thing as overkill. It's called being prepared for anything haha.
