I have a shakespeare spinning Tiger combo. It works great for me. all I catch are little channels but it seems durable and the spool holds a lot of line. I think it is a great beginers reel and rod. What do you guys think about it?

I have 3 of the spincast Tiger combos. Never had any trouble with them. I am used to slinging the line a good distance with baitcasters so the only thing I did was change the line to 12lb. Berkley Big Game to make them cast further for when I need more distance bankfishing. With the 20lb. test line I couldn't cast 1/4 way out into the lake I was fishing, spooled it with 12lb. and accidently hit a pontoon on the other side of the lake without much effort. Hard to beat for a $20 channel cat combo with a bait clicker. I would think the spinning reels would cast a little better than the spincast models. What pound test line are you running on yours and do they cast well?
Abu
i have one of the closed face reel tiger combos and the outside of the reel itself was made of hard plastic and if you tighten it up too much it will break the reel cover i know because my stepson dropped it when he was using it and now the reel cover likes to fly up the line when you cast it too hard lol other than that i havent had any trouble out of it lol for 20 bucks you can't beat it unless you spend 20 more dollars on it and buy an alpha spinning reel for it lol
I got one of these rods ...

and I use it for my Bullheads , Channels ... or if im trying for Walleye
and just about anything else that likes to put up a good fight ...

I got mine in Vestal NY Wal Mart .... but mine only has the 12 lb test line
on it ... its a 7 ft Medium action ... and it does not have a bait clicker

my question is are there different model out there of this series ... just wondering ...

I like how the rod is balenced and it preforms well ... i can cast pretty far with it too ... and i totally agree that you cant beat the price of $20
I have one of the open face ones. They do cast pretty well. They aren't the best quality out there, but you get what you pay for.

Abu- Yours has a baitclicker?
i have one. i wouldn't waste the money on the closed face my buddie has one and the case broke too. the spinnong one i have has done well. i trust is for channels but wouldn't go big game hunting with it. i use baitcasters now most of the time. the wife uses this one now cause there easier to cast. for $20 thier fine imo.
the answer to your question is: yes there are different types of these mine was spooled with 20 lb line and had the auto-reverse and bait clicker on it for 20 bucks and that was down in chattanooga tennessee. hope this helps.
I have never had any problems with my open faced reel. Treats me pretty good actually. But I'm not exactly reeling in monster cats if you know what I mean. LOL
I have one of those combos, the reel model is TSP50A, I like it alot.
I got it at Wallies in Bartow, they were sellin it as a Salt Water combo.
I'm not one for shakespear reels but this one is pretty strong.
I put 30lb braid on it and used it salt water fishin at the Skyway pier in St. Pete.
It held up against a 60lb or so tarpon, until the hook straightened out. I was fishin for Spanish Makerl, so wasn't set up for anything that big.

What the heck, the rod alone is definately worth 20 bucks.

Wish they came in 7ft.medium heavy.
ya. thats what we said a few times. at least ya get a decent rod even if the reel goes quick. still have mine though. i let other guys and my wife use it when we go camping. i prefer the baitcasters now.
i still have my reel too it is on a 10$ fishing pole also from wally world lmao remember the shakspeare poles the cheapest ones? lol thats what the reel is on now so i dont care if it gets carried away now lol i would only be out 10 bucks lol darn the bass rod is gone! lol still got the good ones hehehe
I CONSIDER THIS ROD TO BE DISPOSIABLE......

""FOR THE RECORD"" THIS A GREAT COMBO FOR THE PRICE

WHEN YOU BUST THE GUIDES OR THE REEL GOES JUST GET A NEW ONE......

YOUR ONLY OUT OF 20 BUCKS AND SAVES MORE MONEY FOR LINE AND TERMINAL TACKLE..... ( IF ANYONE OUT THERE GETS THIS... THE REEL DRAG SLIPS SLIGHTLY AT A LIGHTER DRAG BUT I HAVE 15LB HI VIS BBG ON IT AND IT WORKS FINE......)

I PLAN ON GETTING 3 MORE OF THESE FOR STRIPER SEASON
i watched my buddy bring in a 48 pound blue from santee cooper on one of the $20 spinning tiger combos. pretty decent combo for the price.
I wa just looking at them this afternoon...........maybe I'll pick one up and give it a shot.
they aint that bad a rod/reel combo as long as you take the 12lb mono off of the open face tigers and put 25lb spider wire on them. like everyone says 20 bucks so if you lose one you aint out a million dollars. my friend had the closed faced ones idk what you call em spincastings maybe and its lasted him 5 years.

THE REEL IS ALRIGHT BUT I WANTED IT TO HAVE MORE RANGE....( TO BE MORE SENSITIVE )

1. TRIED TO MESS WITH THE SPRING.... DIDNT DO MUCH

2. TOOK OUT THE SNAP RING ON THE SPOOL !!!!!JACKPOTT !!!!! SAW THE DISCS AND SAID " GOTTA GO "

3. TOOK THEM ALL OUT AND SEPERATED THEM ( REMOVED THE LAST ONE )

4. PACKED THEM WITH WHITE GREASE

5. PUT IT BACK TOGETHER

6. NOW THAT REEL IS " AS SMOOTH AS BUTTER "

YOU MAY THINK I MEAN THAT ITS "SMOTHER" THAN IT WAS BEFORE BUT I MEAN THAT ITS SMOOTHER THAN MY NEIGHBORS $120 ABU GARCIA REEL ( HE LEFT IT ON OUR BOAT AND BEING THE GOOD GUY I AM I BROUGHT IT IN OUR HOUSE )

I have 2 spinning and have had one for a couple years . I caught a 4ft shark and got a sea turtle about 100lbs up to the pier before it straightened the hook if you use your drag correctly it'll last ! And the line capacity was good enough even though the turtle almost spooled me 4 or 5 times !

IM CURRENTLY CUAGHT UP IN GETTING 50LB PP BUT WHEN I THINK OF IT......

IVE SEEN 100 LB PP LEADERS FRAY AND SNAP AROUND HERE

I NEED TO POST THAT OVER IN THE LINE ARCHIVE CAUSE I PANNED ON GETTING SOME AND GOT IDEAS FROM ALOT OF PEOPLE BUT I REALIZED THAT ITS NOT THE LINE BUT THE REEL+THE FINESS OF FIGHTING THEM
Been using one of these since last year and have no complaints.
i went and got some 35 lb gorilla tough line and now this is going to be my ultimate channel rig....... i can cast a 2 oz sinker pretty far so thats my edge on the mono.....

this line is very strong and abrisive resistant......

i have a piece of roughly finished metal and 10 lb bbg got 23 slides across it......35lb gorilla line got 44 slides.......50 lb spiderwire stealth got 9 slides

man.... for the money its worth it.......... i would advise getting a roller tip though ( i got them on order )
