How big of a shad is it alright to bait up whole? I usually catch several that are 12in + and have always cut them up. Just wondering if they are to big for a big blue or flathead?

As long as you have a big enough hook shad that big will work. You will need a 9/0 or 10/0 hook. For channels 4-6" are my favorite.

Thanks I will have to try that, where would I hook a shad that big? Would I need to let them run with it a bit before I set my hook?

i have used gizzard shad live to 14". i guess i went against the grain, as i only used a 7/0 octopus circle, hooked through the nostril. you won't catch as many fish as good ol cut bait, but the size is way bigger. for flatties, live carp have always performed better for me than shad. a big flattie will crush a 12" carp and then it's on. good luck.

If you are fishing water that holds Big Blues, then 12 inches is not unreasonable. I typically will clip the tail to stimulate blood/movement.

Have better luck on shad heads with part of body than whole fish or other parts cut.

Try hooking the shad in the back. It should give the catfish enough reason to grab on hold on with its wounded swimming.
