Here in Philadelphia, we havew a spring run of hickory and American shad. I was wondering if any of you shad guys ever caught them on sabiki rigs? Will they hit a sabiki rig? I catch herring on them but never tried for shad.

I have never tried to catch Shad with anything but a net, Normally a throw net. Shad eat algae. Skip jack eat the shad thats why they will bite the grubs and small baits you throw. Hope this helps...

I know hickory & American shad are more like a skipjack than like a gizzard or threadfin shad, and I've seen pictures of the "shad darts" used to fish for them, so I would think that a sabiki rig would work well for them. Be sure to check your local regs first, though.

Shad fishing on the St.Johns River used to be a big thing(Shad Derby) but went by the wayside during the 'energy crisis' and now hear nothing of it.
    Fun on an ultralight.--shu
