How can you tell the difference between a Shad or Gar jumping in the water cause I never know which one it is?

if it's a shad he will barely break te surface, a gar will thrash around chasing bait!!!

There are a couple of things .... A shad is usually a silvery white color and up to maybe 2 pounds in size .... a Gar is goldish color and up to 35 Pounds (much bigger in some cases) When a gar is feeding you can many times see it's long snout come out of the water, ussually followed by a long streak of it's back .... when they are spawning they roll and wallow like an old hog and are very noisey. Once you have seen and can distinguish to the two ... there will be no mistaken what is what. Hope this helps ....... Garry- :cool2:

the best bet is to empty your shotgun at the boils, then see what is there! :smile2: cast a snag hook over there, or half a perch will attract a gar if that's what it is.

shad make more of a slap at the surface. Longnose, most of the time, will toss a stream of water as the nose comes up and breaks the surface.
