Hijacking again as I would like to see an answer for this. I am thinking about going down tomorrow and would like to know I can get bait before I go down. I will be going to Pack's, Rock's Pond or over to the state park depending on where I can get bait.

This time of year most all the bait shops have live bait on hand

Final question for me...what is the average cost of herring or shad or whatever?

You can expect to pay up to $2/per, depending on size, availability, quantity and location. The herring run will be over soon, and the big bait will be harder to come by.

From what I have read, the cats are bitting mostly shad and not herring at all. They say they are catching their own shad. My question as a novice, is how do you catch shad?
    1. where are they?
    2. how large are they?
    3. use a cast net?
    4. how deep?
5 open water, shallow, near banks, back of coves, etc?

Hope to come down the 2nd week in May.
    Thanks ahead of time.

  8. Both Canal Lakes and hill's landing have herring(large river herring and smaller). 1/2 doz. Lg. herring from hill's landing(DIVERSION canal) for
$ 8.00. $9.00 per dz of smller herring and shad.

    Sorry Santee Catman.
I read too fast. I see you said shad.
I'm going cappie and hybrid fishing in about 30 mins. and I read your post in a hurry. No disrespect. Have a super day.
