I have fished almost exclusively with circle hooks for the last two years, 90% of the time with the rods in holders. I don't know if that makes me a pro or not, but this is what I will do unless Captain Hugh tells me different.
When a Blue hits, there should be little mistaking it for it should bend her over right to the water if it's anything like channel fishing with lighter equipment. You want the drag tight enough that the line won't snap. That said, the fish will be hooked when (and if) you can get the rod out of the holder. Her's a tip to get your rod out of the holder. Instead of pulling UP on the front end of the rod, push down on the end of the butt which gives you more leverage.
Good luck down there..... oops I'll be there with you! What time are ya'll leaving? I am picking Skip up at 8:30 am at the Bob Evans in Zanesville.
I'm getting excited. My gill net should be shipping today.
