I tried to fish the mouth of the vermillion river last night with no luck. I got bites but they were all from mosquitos. Is there a trick to this River fishing like not going until night time or putting the bait by log jams etc. I went around 7:00 and quit close to 9:00 with no hits or anything. I used one 4-5 inch perch and one 4-5 inch bluegill with about 2 feet of leader off a bank sinker. The last time I caught anything river fishing it was at the tubes by tuttle and took 4 hours before I got a good size channel. I threw the bait where the water was swirling from the two rivers meeting.
Thanks,

Seems like a pretty textbook setup/location/bait to me. This time of year I usually go out about sunset and fish into the night.

Depending on what your lookin for (flatty or channel) you may want to spot hop a little more. With channels if I dont get a bite within about 30-45 min of being in a spot I'll go try another, flatties you just gotta be patient.

Try some cover (log jams, etc) and you'll get a bite or two I would guess.

I didn't expect to but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing anything wrong. It looks like I have to spot hop the river more if looking for channels. Yeah I have never caught a large flathead so that is really what I am after. I guess that I have to have a whole night in order to wait for them. That must be why so many people do set lines for them. I'll never go out without bug spray from now on either. The bugs are out in force.

That is a great text book spot aal the right features and all. Just to give you some info about that area. 4 of us fished it last sunday night from roughly 7:30pm to I think it was just after 3am. So with 7 poles out total in the area from the highway to the mouth I had 2 bites and I was just north of the RR bridge tossing into the log jam and under the bridge. The old man had a few bites fishing the main current of the river using Sonny's and Sudden Impact. JJ, his boy and I was using cut bait live bait and frogs. My only bites came on cut shad. Neither were great bites one hit it a few times I set the hook had it for about 20 ft and then the line went slack and nothing. The other ran the clicker for a few seconds then the line started moving in. I brought in the slack and had one little pull then nothing. My best advise is put you time in and work at it. River fishing does not come easy but it is fun times.

I've been fishing the neosho river for over fifty years and I'm still looking for one of those spots.

Sometimes it comes down to what the cats in that specific area are accustomed to eating. I sat on a great snag all night on the Marais Des Cyne river one night to bag one flathead. Shortly after sunrise, an old man came walking up river dragging about 10 flats from 3 to 10 lbs.

He asked how I did over night and commented that he loves fishing the snag I was saddled up to. I showed him my one lowly cat and he said I must have been using the wrong bait.

Sure enough, I was using goldfish and he had been using creek chubs and native redfin minnows. He told me to bring a seine net going forward if I wanted to catch fish.

Stick with it Matt. You'll get them figured out.

Matt river fishing is sometimes hard work. But the benefit to it is having the chance of catching a trophy fish. There is no tellin what's in a river. A guy has to deal with rising/falling water, shifting of structure, etc. And as said above, using all natural baits. But more than anything, it's time spent out there doing it. Heck I do more scouting then fishing lots of the time in search of that GIANT FLATHEAD!!! LOL I go home on several occasions without a fish, but man when it all comes together on that one night, it makes everything you do worth it. Just ask Kyle and Seth! LOL :act-up::umbrella::wink:

There is not a lot going on right now on the river around there.

Tuttle just reduced out flow yesterday and that of course makes the river drop.

Catch it on a slight rise, and float a big slip float set about 4' deep there next to the wood and you will have better luck. A 6" green sunfish is perfect.

The gar are THICK in the Vermillion and they will bite anything but leeches and dip bait

A guy I work with was out there last weekend and had about the same luck. He ended up with 4 sturgen and 1 bite on live 4in crawdad. You might try and use smaller cut bait and down size your perch. One thing also would be trying some crawlers down there. It is a nice little area but it is fish alot, so this might be the reason for the slow bite.
