just the other day a friend of mine said Savage is the A10 Warthog of the rifle world..not as sleek and sexy as some other aircraft, but when it comes to putting holes in things, not many can do it better!
I just wish theyd fix the Bmag! Ive been foaming at the mouth for one since before it was released, but Im not keen on buying a rifle that needs to be re-stocked before I even take it hunting. They finally got the barreled action right with the heavy barreled stainless version, why cant they throw a laminate stock on it???
Here's another "POS" rifle to ad....I traded a neighbor a cheap harbor freight benchtop drill press and belt sander for a new(ish) rem 770 sporter in 7RM...I will say its an improvement over its older brother the 710, which I had and even for a budget rifle, it was pretty bad..But to the 770....Yes, the bolt has some slop and does tend to bind a little on the forward stroke, but that is easily remedied by taking it out and scrubbing out all the shipping lube/gunk from the factory and apply a quality oil. Still a little bind but really not so bad unless you try to cycle fast and slam the bolt forward. That could present a problem in the heat of the moment when a quick follow up shot is needed. The stock is ok, nothing pretty or comfortable about it, but to shoulder and shoot an animal, its all you need..Squeezed off some rounds from his picnic table with a plastic rest and, while the scope isn't zeroed, it did produce 1.25" groups at 95 yards shooting Rem core lokt ammo. Probably would do better with a better rest, but still more than capable of killing a deer. The factory supplied scope is pretty cheap but its clear and I'd say if you shots fall under 200 yards, it will do fine. The trigger is a little stiff with some take-up and a "gritty" feel to it, but still, not bad for a hunting rifle. I probably wont carry the gun unless its a rainy day and don't want my nicer guns out in it. But I would feel quite confident anytime I carried it that it will get the job done.
Bottom line:
Its not as smooth as a Savage or some other "budget" rifles but for $300 with a scope included, you definitely get your money's worth and it will work just fine and be dependable for the guy who just wants it to hunt with, and game will be just as dead as if they were shot with a more expensive gun.
