rebuilding new orleans ? what a joke

11255 Views 98 Replies 33 Participants Last post by  Fatkat
we have a town here near the mississippi in illinois called valmeyer.
it was flooded at least twice and was going to be rebuilt but the
insurance companies weren't going to insure it again,so they moved the whole town higher up in the bluffs.
i think new orleans should do the same .
why would they risk this again?

I would immagine there is going to be a huge job market for the construction trades, before too long, and probably a few others.

Rebuilding is going to be real expensive. And we all know who will be picking up a major portion of the tab.

Mike
New Orleans shouldnt be any different then anywhere where flooding is prone to happen.

If insurance companies wont cover the property the banks wont loan.
North Carolina has gotten real strict on their flood plain plan.
Pretty much everywhere now they issue permits only beyond the 100 year flood plain.
The only areas it would be different is on the eastern most parts of the state.
I wouldn't rebuild there because this will certainly happen again. The ground the city is built on is several feet below sea level and is sinking slowly into the gulf.

Here is a link to a U.S. News and World Report story from July, 2005 that sent a chill down my spine, knowing what I know now.

http://www.usnews.com/usnews/news/articles/050718/18neworleans.htm
It's a tough call, but unless there is a plan that can shore up the levy system to withstand a category 5, I don't think we should rebuild it. It may be 100 years before the next big storm comes through.. or it may happen next year, or 3 times in the next 10 years.
Thanks Fishfanatic for posting that link. Talk about calling the situation beforehand...that article is eerie in it's foresightedness...
OK, who here has been to new Orleans? I have. It is a huge city. Everyone here is saying move it. Where? And who is going to tear down the old city? Who is going to replant the area and get rid of the sewer systems pavement etc? Or are we just going ot leave the square miles of mess for our kids to deal with in the future? And who is going to pay for this undertaking?

And if that is the case, then we need to go ahead make arrangments to find new locations for other cities to, we can start with Anchorage Alaska, SAn Fransico CA, and Los Angeles CA. They all sit on a major fault lines and are very prone to earthquakes. In addition the all border the ocean and are right at sea level or below.

I realize that I am being sarcastic, but be realalistic, moving a city the size of New ORleans is not a real possibility. Many major cities lie in high risk areas for natural disasters it happens, but when cities grow as large of some of these have it is too late to move them.

New Orleans will be rebuilt.
Now that this has happened, they will do the necessary upgrades to the levee's at an enormous cost but it will be done.
The vast majority of the city will be torn down as restoration for the majority will cost way more than starting over from scratch.

In then end, it will end up in much better shape and improve the economy down there far beyond what it was before.
i just now seen a puke induceing clip of a resident of n.o.
frothing his hatered at the camera ,telling all who will listen
how this disaster effort caused by racism.

i guess he was forced to stay there and ride it out.
he looked like a pretty healthy human being to me so i doubt that physical disabilities hindered his evacuation.

they were told to leave.
they had enough time to leave.
they knew their town was not invincable.

how on earth can the race issue be brought up ???????

all i can say now is i hope if they do relocate and rebuild this city
they get some new occupants .

they can make tinsheds on tentpole houses right on the beach for the
rapeists , thugs, and race baiters

You know There is just too many people out there who try to think of excuses why bad stuff happens. I am not a racisist never have been never will be.

Mother Nature isn't either, she don't care what color you skin is if you get in her way she will take you down.

Personnally if i found out that a major Hurricane was comin my way I would get out of her way. If I couldn't I would make sure to sand bag and board up get supplies and prepare for the worse, which happened.
I'm sure they will attempt to rebuild the city...but they need to be smarter about the reconstruction, and focus as much on prevention as on cure. Amsterdam and the Netherlands are all below sea level, and they have a smarter levee system in place.

This is a good article, with lots of good points.
No doubt about the racism...
We forced them to live there because we KNEW it was going to happen sooner or later.
Most of the people there received no warning about the hurricane at all.
All of the relief people had to stay back by order of the president until he gave the go but he waited until the pressure of Jesse Jackson before he gave the order to move in. Even then, only white people were rescued at first.

Fortunately, because of the hero like efforts of people like Jesse Jackson, Michael Moore, the ACLU and others, the truth got out to America forcing Bush to pretend to do the right thing.

None of this would have every happened when Clinton was in office!
He made the world "cooler" with his legislation on the environment.
Bush is at fault for the hurricane ever forming!
Him and his big greedy oil buddys have destroyed the environment at the expense of the black man.

WAKE UP AMERICA!

Chris, I hope alot of what you said was sarcasm. If it wasn't a race issue to beign with, it sure is now, but saying we forced them to live there??? And Bush caused the hurricane? Come on. If you chose not to do everything to improve your life, then you have failed yourself. Being born into, and caught up in a poverty cycle is a terrible beginning...but it's just that, a beginning. The end of your life many times is determined by the actions you yourself have taken. Those in school, can be taught, if they want to learn. If they are taught, in school and at home, to educate to better themselves. Simple programs to enforce education would are instrumental in the evolvement of this country.

I'm not saying it was the peoples fault they lived in those communities, far from it. I'm saying it's everyone's responsibility to educate the ignorant, and show them a better path. How can you learn if you don't know you can? Teach our poor to empower themselves, and the world will change.

Your right, of course, New Orleans will be rebuilt, better and safer than before. It will have a levy system that will be a model to the world, and an evacuation plan that will accomodate everyone willing to leave. These things will take years to accomplish, the cost will be staggering, but it will be done.
Jen.....Chris, Chris....Jen, now that introductions are done let get to business. Sarcasm.........YES. ;)
Oh, good, Charlie...I was hoping Chris wasn't equating George Bush with God ;) :grin-big:
(part of garyf's post)
and an evacuation plan that will accomodate everyone willing to leave.

this is the insane mentality that is staggering to me.

the whole doggone catastrophy (haveing to rescue morons) could have been avoided had the residents not acted like _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ and tried to be cool and ride out a storm .
the good mayor of new orleans had over 100 buses in a lot that with a few phonecalls could have had them manned and ready to haul to higher ground
all these residents .

willing to leave???????willing to leave??????

dont play in the street a car might hit you.
dont run with a sharp knife in hand you might trip fall and impale yourself .
dont point a gun at someone you dont mean to shoot it might go off.
dont stay in the path of a hurricane and expect to be intact after it passes over and then cry foul cause you acted like a retard.
