I've been cleaning out my shop and ran across four old third Hp electric motors. I guess I picked them up from the farm. Two of the motors work good but the other two I don't know about. They sart and run good at first then after a minute or so they start smoking. It's my guess they are ready for the scrap pile but I don't know. Anyone know what's wrong with them or should they just be thrown away.

Check to see what voltage they are. They be 208/230 motors.

The motors are 110 volt and I am trying them on 110 volts.

Sounds like the bearings have an issue. Try an amp draw, amp draw sound be in the 7-10 amp range. If they have a start capacitor try a fresh start cap.

Thank you I will give it a try. I'm not up to par on what makes a motor run, all i know is when you turn them on they are suppose to go.

    Thank you again

Sounds like some old hvac blower motors. If that be the case they would be considered junk.
