Power pro or Sufix braid

831 Views 29 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  Hunter62
I’m just getting started as far as hunting big catfish.
Boat is rigged and I have a few of the cheaper catfish rods 7’-8’ med/hvy fast. Going to find out what works for best for me then get serious about gear. Using reels I all ready have Abu Garcia 6500 that I’ve had for a while. Not China reels.
I’m looking at braided line. I can get more on the reels plus I like braid.
Question is Power Pro or Sufix? I’m also thinking of hi vis line. Which would be best green or yellow?
Thanks, Doug

My vote is for Power Pro in hi-vis yellow. If I'm fishing multiple lines and a fish goes sideways trying to cross lines, the hi-vis is easier to see and keep things from getting tangled. As far as braid versus mono, I use braid because I like the thin diameter and zero stretch. I fish shallow rocky waters and occasionally will lose fish when the braid grinds against the rocks. I think mono is more resistant to failure from rubbing on rocks than braid but I still choose braid.

Thanks for the reply. Power Pro seems to be popular here on the site. Good quality for the price too.
The only reason I’m looking at Sufix is it claims to be mor abrasive resistant. My only experience is with spider wire and that was a while ago. Now everyone has braid.
As far as knot tying if I remember correctly the polymer knot always held fast.
FYI to everyone I’m finding better deals on EBay with free shipping on braided line.

I have both. Seems to me power pro holds its color better. Never had a prob with abrasion.

Thank you sir. Hadn’t thought about fading or color bleeding.

I like to back my reels with about 65 lb braid and then put about 120 ft or so of mono on that.
I do that so I don't have to completely respool after a few break-offs.
I like 20 or 30 lb Big Game.
I usually only fish 2 rods at one time so I like orange line on one and Solar Collector green on the other.

Oh, and I just got some Sufix Superior Neon Fire recently and man that stuff is bright.

Sufix for me. Diawa J8 is also pretty good.

When I used braid before I spooled big game mono first to keep the braid from slipping on the reel also to take up space so I had a full spool for better casting. I don’t even remember which knot to tie the two together with. I’ll have to look it up. As far as mono-Big game is all I’ve used for years. It would get those big bass from under the docks and out of the brush. 25 years ago when I was a serious bass fisherman and catfished now and again.
Now I’m retired and every now and then I like to go rip a lip to make sure I still got it. But I’m tuning in on catfish now. I want a couple of the right size for the freezer and A heavy weight to take a picture of for bragging rights. The big ones all ways get released to go get bigger and have more catfish.
I have 300yrds. of Sufix I bought before thinking it through all the way. It’s 40lb low vis green. Since I’m stuck with it I’ll put it on a couple of smaller rods I think are going to be my channel cat rods. I want hi vis on my 7’-8’ rods I just got. I have a good size spinning reel on a 9’ medium ugly stick I’ve caught many of shark with fishing the beach at Matagorda. It’s loaded all the way with Spider Wire. I’m going to get an 8’ med/hvy for it so I’ll have one more rod for catfish. I will be using the 9’ at first because I have to sneak in the gear and things for the boat a little at a time . 😂
Thanks for the reply I appreciate all the advice I can get.

Man. I looked at some post on here and it seems several of y’all prefer the more economical braided lines. A read that when your spooling up several rods the cheaper stuff is easier on the wallet and it’s good line. KastKing , Brave Fisherman etc.
Ive shopped them on Amazon and they a lot better on price.
Now I’m leaning towards KastKing but going to do more shopping before pulling the trigger.

I miss read it the first time thinking you used a little braid then filled up on monofilament.
After reading it again that’s a great idea. I have some new 50lb. Big game mono to end mine with.

For flatheads Suffix Performance braid.. it doesn’t have the goretex thread so it sinks

Thanks for sharing your gear and line preferences. I’m looking at the 7000c3 when I’m able to upgrade m gear.

All I run is Kast King Super Power and Suffix 832 Advanced. I like the 832 best. It is the slickest braid I have used and retains color better than any. The Kast King seems much stronger than it's rating but it also has a larger diameter. I run 65# but next Kast King I buy will probably be 50#. You will probably like the Suffix Advanced much better than the rest if that grinding from braid coming through the eyes bothers you. I tried the Power Pro slick but it seemed weak.

100lbs power pro on my sturgeon rods, long mono leader, usually open deep water. Real snaggy stuff I seem to have better luck with heavy mono.

Thanks. I have some Sufix 832 40lb I bought when getting my first catfish rod. Unfortunately I didn’t know about hi vis line benefit at the time and I’m stuck with low vis green. I’m going to put the Sufix on smaller med/hvy AllStar rods and use them for different types of fishing as well as catfish. They’ll make great channel cat rods. I just ordered a spool of KastKing Destron 50lb for my other Catfish rods.
I have a spinning combo I put together with a 9’ med. ugly stick and Spider Wire for fishing the beach at Matagorda and it’s caught several sharks 4’ or so without a problem so I’m goi to try it out.
I may get a med/hvy 8’ or so and put the reel on it. The rest of my reels I’m starting out with are Abu bait casters I’ve had for a while.
