10 lbs of drag at strike is a buttload of drag.......I set my around 6 lbs at strike......test 10 out with a scale and then try pulling it with your hand......if it only has 10 max, your still fine

TO BE HONEST.....I DONT KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS

IS THAT LIKE 10 LBS OF DRAG SLIP???????:confused2:

It will not slip till you get to 10lb of pull.
That is a lot of force. For most catfishing.

Now if you were using 50lb mono and was trying to keep a flat out of a snag, you might have the drag set to 17lb. But that would hog fish in.

Some of the people on here use ABU 6500 and 6000.
I use 6500C3 set at 10lb drag force, and it hard to break the line.
I am using 40lb Power Pro.

Congratulations, you now have yourself a mighty fine 209, a super cattin' reel, and what a great gesture from PENN.

That's the kind of thing that makes you wanna buy from someone even when you don't really need to. They hold so much line; I wouldn't mind having one of those with some 65lb braid on it... All my fishing spots would be snag-free.

The 209 are great reels, just a slow retrieve.
I have one, and would recommend it to anyone.
Quite a nice gesture from Penn.

I have been thinking of picking up a couple of Penn 209s with line counters for drifting and trolling. Let me know how it does. My only complaint is the slow retrieve but for the purposes I plan to use it that shouldn't matter too much.

While it seems like a slow retreive, you have to take into consideration the diameter of the spool too. A big spool with a slow gear ratio will retrieve line just about as quickly compared to a reel with a small spool and a high ratio. Small spools are one reason that those reels have such high ratios.

Penn 209 retrieves 19" of line per revolution of the spool. 3.2-1 ratio
    320 yds of 20lb

Penn Int. 975 retrieves 20" of line per revolution of the spool. 4.5-1 ratio
    340yds of 15lb

Penn Pursuit retrieves 27" of line per revolution of the spool. 6.4-1 ratio
    200yds of 12lb

As you can see, you double the ratio with the Pursuit reel compared to the 209, yet you're ony getting an extra 8" of line per revolution.

I'll take the higher capacity, lower ratio and less torque on my hand/wrist any day of the week. For big catfish anyway.

that is exactly the way my 209 is set up. 65# tug o war braid. Love it. It has a mile of braid on it!
