I have a very old Penn 320 GTI real that I used when salt water fishing and was wondering if it is an overkill for cats

Nope just gotta find the big cats. :smile2:
Seriously though it should make a fine flathead reel.

like what i said in an earlier thread, whatever you have, whatever you can afford, and if it works for you! THATS the main thing, it has to be comfortable to you!!! If you can adjust to that reel, and get to know its capabilitys, and it works for how you fish, then use it!!! myself, abus is what i love and i know each of my reels like a daughter or son!!! rollo

Yes it would work and no it's no an overkill. Perfect reel for boats. Perfect for shallow water flatheading.

I've caught 5 foot sharks with one spooled with 65lb power pro so it should bring any most catfish.

I have had one of those reels and used it for 2 years...It is a very good reel.

I just prefer a smaller reel, but I would not consider it overkill for big cats.

I have a Penn 321GTI the lefthand model. I've used it in saltwater many times.
If needed I would use it for catfish if it came down to it. :cool2:

Hal, you are set for flat fishing with that GTi. I don't even use 6500's for flats, only channels and carp. You need a big solid reel for some heavy line and stress of a few big flats.
