Just picked up a PENN 209 at Wally World for $35.00 (marked down $20.00).
Any opinions about this reel are appreciated. Never owned one but was willing to take a chance. Will probably spool with 35# Big Game and mount on a 7' med or med hvy rod.

    Thanks

I've used these reels for years. Plenty of power and they cast very well. make sure you keep it greased and enjoy. you got a good price on it I've never seen one new for less than $50.

They have been around since 1958.That ought to tell you something.I am 61 years old.It is the most popular saltwater level wind reel that I have ever seen.I have seen it in use from the Texas coast, clear up through Nova Scotia. Also in Scotland and Spain. Many of the early ones are still around and being fished by old fishermen or their descendants that they have passed them on to.Treat it like you should and your grandchildren will be fishing with it.I love you brothers and sisters.peewee

takes a good bit of weight to cast it but you can pull a stump with it--enjoy

Think it depends on which Wal-Mart you go to. Near the coast here in Texas, Wally World carries the Penn spinning reels.

I now own two 209's. They are great reels, though heavy. Got one from a pawn shop for $30, almost no sign of use. The other, I bought off Ebay for $17. It is an older model, even has the spare pawl storage space in the side plate. But, it too has no sign of use. I have them on 7 foot Ugly Stick Big Water rods and typically cast 3-4 oz's of lead plus bait with them. Takes a bit to get used to casting with them, but I like them.

Oklahoma City. Was looking to find a 7000 on sale but found the Penn. I went to locations, both had sold out of 7000's.

Thanks for reply.Have brother-in-law in Norman will try to get him to pick me up a couple of those. They won't cast as smooth as the Abu's but if you have big fish on you will be better off with the Penn
