Sorry Jimmy I figured you would know what I meant. A PCP (Pre-Charged Pneumatic) is a pellet rifle that uses a reservoir containing high pressure air (2 to 3 thousand PSI) to shot a number of pellets before it needs to be re-pressurized. Noted for being very accurate because of little or no recoil. A springer is a pellet rifle that uses a compressed spring to provide the pressure to fire each pellet. Not known for being as accurate as PCP because when you pull the trigger, a very heavy spring has to travel a distance to produce the propelling pressure. That gives a recoil and a forward push caused by the spring reaching the end of its travel before the pellet even leaves the barrel.
I went to school today and measured their pellet trap. It stands 67" tall, 34" wide, 20" deep at the base and 2 1/2" deep at the top. It's made of 3/4" plywood. The box is 62" tall, with a few extra screws and glue I figure $595 for 10 traps. I've got to look at casters that will give a 5" space. Sheet metal 1/8" X 32 1/2" X 60" for the back drop. Sheet metal 1/8" X 32 1/2" X 29" and someone that will fold it for the catch pan. Add the screws to attach the back drop and liquid nail to hold it solid. I hope we can build these for $125 each.
That last commit was from my daughter-in-law. We have new members on the county school board. All of the schools ROTC units sent cadets to the meeting to tell them how much they like program.
I got a call friday morning, the Lt. Col. is applying for a grant from the NRA for 20 target traps monday. I called a metal supplier, they don't cut the sheets. I called 4 shops and got 4 different prices. One sheet will be as low as $35 and as high as $86. The school has a metal shop. Their shear press won't cut 1/8", 11 gauge. Their brake press can fold the metal for the catch pans.
I have a couple of pictures of the trap on my phone. I can't send them to my pc, but I can send them to your phone.
You can post the pictures if you like. Send me a PM if you wish.
Those traps look awesome. I just got a nitro piston .22 and I love it. In the house I use an old pillow stuffed with clothes, lol but it works. Wish I would havegotten into air years ago, a PCP is next!
The Lt. Col. applied for a grant through the NRA for 20 traps. Waiting word before we can start gathering material and construction.
The booster club is trying to apply for tax exempt, they need a person/company to back them with $1500.
No word on the grant yet.
I got to go to school before it's out for summer to clean the range room. A few cadets were removing the target boxes from the backer panel, dumping them and storing them away. Others were sweeping the floor. I came in and grabbed a broom so I wouldn't be there to long. Most of the frames had been rebuilt with a sheet of metal on the back. Not as much wood and cardboard pieces this time.
I built a fire in my pit. Sat the #10 cast iron dutch oven on the grate and filled it up. After it melted down some I added the rest of the pellets. Got it fluxed with sawdust and cast 24 1 lb ingots. Need to find some 1X6s to make crates for storage.
A note from my daughter-in-law. The NRA turned the MCJROTC unit at Lake Cormorrant High School down on a grant for their pellet traps.
We need a good fund raiser to draw lots of money before school starts.
I haven't updated this thread in a few years. A couple of weeks after school is out for summer break I get ti clean the range rooms. I fill two 5 gallon buckets about half way with spent pellets and a little trash that helps with fluxing. Some pellets are pure lead and some are solder. Last year Lt Col said he hopes to have a rifle team this year. I just sent him a text about that.
