I posted in the general flathead about building a new rod and reel but i got to thinking PA general talk forums is probably better because you folks know the general layout of the rivers and lakes.

I fish from the bank 90% of the time and mainly use bluegill as bait. So i am building a new setup for flatties for the big al. Also the overhang from tree branchs limit the size of rod i can get with 8foot as max length (unless i do some tree trimming but dont wanna get into trouble with the law)

Here is some of the things i was looking at. What rod and reel would you choose for bank fishing? I am open to any suggestion even if i didnt post it on my list.

Rods:
SURGE TROPHY ELITE MED HEAVY CASTING 7'10"
SHAKE UGLY STK TIGER 7' CASTING, MH

Reels:
ABU GARCIA 7000C3i
ABU GARCIA 7000iCS PRO ROCKET - INTERNATIONAL
(both are made in china)

I looked the info up on catfish connection but ill probably hit ebay to buyem or something.

I have the Abu 7000 ICS Pro Rocket. A great reel that won't let you down. I don't have either of the rods you mention so can't comment on those. Seeing how your fishing from shore I would suggest the longest rod you can get away with for casting distance. I looked in the CC catalog and that Surge does sound nice.

don't know to much about those rods but i would go with the surge and the reel can't beat the rocket. not sure how far you have to cast but i would go bigger than 8 ft, course i use nothing but 10-12ft surf rods..lol. don't be affaird of going with a heavy action rod you get 3-8 oz sinker with bait it adds up fast. good luck either way and tight lines justin

not try to tell you to do anything you don't want or not cool with, but what does trimming a few branches going to hurt. think you said before you fish around blawnox area coming from mercer. you drive by a ton of open spots you can fish with surf rods with no tree trimming..LOL. shit along the north shore walkway is about as open as you can get, and it's all light up. next time you head down this way give me a heads up maybe i can meet up with you. might know a few better spots than where you go now...might?..LOL(don't worry pat aint going to give the honey holes away) LMAO!!!tight lines justin

I might be chiming in here too late but my advice would be to put your money into the reel. any 7000 size abu conventional will whip whip any PA cat. Both rods will suit you, I like the Surge. I wouldn't be too worried about getting the longest rod that you can afford, anything 7 or over will be dandy (MH or H). Sounds like you'll have one sweet setup! Check out the berkley glowstick rods if you havent already. they have a nice action and are useful for night fishing. Cheap too. If you go braid, go HEAVY. i've found that anything under 50 can saw itself right in half when its grating over rocks. (learned that lesson the hard way).

I fish the Al downtown Pittsburgh with lots of tree and brush in my way... i use a 7' Ugly with an Ambassadeur on it and it works nicely... tho i do admit to some minor limb trimming.

After talking to everyone and getting some good feedback i finaly placed my order this morning. I went with my last post a Abu 7000C3i and Ugly stik BWB 8ft H rod. With all the input from the forum's and what small amount of knowledge and experience i have. I always wanted a abu 7000c3i since i seen them a while back but rather expensive. I am use to the 30 buck combo deals lol. So this time i got the abu 7000c3i (even know its made in china ba) and i got the Ugly stik BWB 8' H rod.

I figure if these fail then me then i better either switch brands or i don't know wtf i am doing lol. I highly doubt they will fail right of the bat (Knock on wood) but you never know. If they last a long time like i expect them to do then ill order a few more.

I also picked up a new chair (needed new one to hold my tall big ass)and a 15foot tree limb trimmer for when i get a 10 or 12 foot rod. Can't wait to gettem and testem. Also got hell of a deal on the Reel and Rod and chair 50 bucks off and free 2day shipping :)

(About being made in china eh everything is made in china now days.)

Sounds like a sweet setup for sure. I only use abu 7000s and calcuttas and I feel a little bit better when I hook a big fish on the abus. Haven't failed me yet! knock on wood
