I took my dad and a co-worker up to Lockport, Manitoba. We fished for 2 days, only during the daytime, and only in 1 - 5 ft of water. We caught skipjack and cut them up and used 7/0 circle hooks about 12-18in under a large float. We caught around 70 fish a day that were over 20lb up to the largest at 33lbs. We also caught alot of fish 10 to 20lbs. In the shallow water it was some crazy fishing, when you would set the hook they were jumping like a musky or large bass would, only these things are solid muscle!!
I hope to get some pics posted, I got some wild video also as we at times had 3 big cats on and we are jumping around in the boat, getting tangled together, tangled in anchors ropes and having at great time. throughout all the excitement we only broke off 1 fish. This was the wildest and craziest fishing I have ever seen in my life and they were all HUGE Channel cats!!
These Channels are built BIG, a 30in cat will weigh 20-22lb. The one in my avatar was the biggest of the trip at 37" - 33lbs!!
My pics won't load, to large format?

Awesome trip. With cats that size and that many, I'm surprised so many people go to canada to walleye and pike fish. I would much rather catch cats like that:tounge_out:

I live in SD right on the Missouri River, some of the best walleye and pike fishing in the country. I know lots of locals that go to Canada and all they fish for is walleye and pike?! I ask them why would you go all the way to Canada to catch something you can catch right out your backdoor? If I'm going to drive 12 hrs I'm going to fish for something I can't catch back home,
or at least not that BIG. The local guys that come into the store think I'm crazy to go that far to catch a catfish! They don't know how much more fun they are than their wimpy little walleye. Oh, also on the Red in Canada you can only keep Channels under 24", we only caught 3 that would have been barely under 24". It is managed as a trophy fishery.

I know what you mean, my fishing at home if we catch one over 10lbs is big.
This trip to Canada spoiled us real bad, I might have to use ultra-lite tackle to make them feel like 20 pounders instead of the 5 pounders we catch.

Congrats on some great fishing! Another thing, as I understand it, is they mandate barbless hooks in Manitoba. It's amazing what real management of a fishery can accomplish.

I'm considering and might possibly get up there in late July to fish the Red River around Lockport for a couple of days. Hopefully there will be a few that aren't spawning at that time.
