I'm setting up my dad with a blue catfish rig for Christmas. He boat fishes and won't need to cast far at all. I'm looking at getting him the Okuma Avenger, 50 series. I would like to stick with mono, but would like to know how 20 - 30lb line will do on this reel? I'm thinking that since it's rated for 280 / 15, that 20lb Big Game should give him about 180yds? I would like the reel to have at least 150yds, so braided would be the next step for heavier weights. Anyone have an Okuma in this size with any comparrisons or recommendations?

    Thanks,

    Mike

With 20 lb Big Game, you should have close to 200 yards on the reel. Look at the Penn reels, though, in my opinion, they are sturdier.

I have an Okuma BX series and I use braided line on it. I can put 150 yds. on it with several turns of Berkley Big Game 25# and still have some room left over.
