I figured I'd start a thread for the western Pa guys who fish the Ohio. Myself and a friend headed down to the river to do some striper fishing yesterday. The fishing was slow, but the ones we did catch were worth the sore shoulders. I remembered I had my camera when my buddy caught his last one. Here's the pic. This one was 8 lbs. and change. The others were all under 5 lbs.

Nice fish, I bet he put up pretty good fight! I'm not from Pa. but I love to catch those Ohio river stripers down here in North Central Ky. Strong, fighting fish! Are you gonna tell us what you got them on? Thanks David

    Thanx guys,

We were using 4" swim baits(Tennessee shad I think). I tried to find some 5" ones at Gander Mnt., they only had the 4". This is my first year fishing exclusively for stripers, and the guys I talked to at the river said the bite would pick up in the next few weeks untill the end of May. That works out good, cause mid-May is when I start fishing for flattys.

Yes they are hybrids. I don't think true stripers run this far inland. I do have a question though. Do hybrid stripers mate since they are hybrid. I would think so with the big population.

thanks yea thats what i thought but with so many resivores and river systems like down in tennessse and kentucky adding stripers to there gamefish i wasnt sure anymore.

and i looked it up for you since i wasnt sure myself, hybrids in general cant spawn. most are released as fry but there have been times when the hybrids have been fertile, most often it is females and they breed back to white bass.

Hydbrid's dont reproduce. In Pa. since they introduced the hydbrid and done so well, the state has put some pure brid Stripper's in several lake now, and they will reproduce. They might of put some in the Ohio as well time will tell.
