Any here ever tried microwaving chicken liver to get it to stay on the hook better? I just did a batch up to try at the river this week. I only pu them in fior about 30 seconds just long enough to get em to harden up a bit and I coated them with garlic powder as well then put them bcak in the container with the blood. Can't wait to try it out!

Never thought of microwaving them. Why not, it toughens everything else up that cooks in it. Did you lay them out on a plate in a single layer, or just a pile, or what? Did it stink bad? I got a bad batch of chicken livers last week, they wouldn't even stay on with the treble hook. I'd try to bait up and they would just fall off before i had a chance to cast. Right mushy even as far as chicken livers go. Luckily it was only a few that i had troubles with, and what wouldn't stay on the hook turned into chum.

I laid em out on a small plate and coated them with garlic salt and did a whole container in 4 or 5 small batches. I left em long enough just to toughen em up close to the consistancy of a soft shrimp I would say. Smelled like cooked liver, not to awful bad. Gonna test em out this weekend, I got em in my bait fridge marinating in the blood and garlic! Give it a try! Should be great for the channel cats!

I've probably posted this several times (apologies) but the trick to getting chicken livers to stay on the hook is threefold:

1) Start with good fresh chicken, that haven't been frozen, if possible. When in good shape, they will stay on a single hook, let alone a treble hook.

2) If you use a treble hook, put a clasp swivel on the end of your line. This way, you can easily remove the hook without constantly re-tying it. Take the swivel hook and push it through the piece of liver. I use #4 trebles mostly.

3) Use bait-mesh, spawn-net, or what ever you call it to tie the liver up in. This is better than pantyhose (IMHO) because it is near impossible to get hose off the hook once it is on. Bait mesh will come off a little easier when you do need to re-bait, plus it seems a little more porous.

Let us know how the nuking goes for you, I am curious. Always looking for new tips. :smile1:

I'm gonna have to try that bait mesh stuff, you're right.... panty hose is almost impossible to get back off the hook!!!! Works like a charm for rotted, mushy suckers and livers though. I imagine bait mesh would work the same, hmmmm....

Tried panty hose and ran into the same problem. Just thougt i would try this as i have read post where you can cure liver and make it tougher by leaving in on a tray in the sun. I also like the elastic thread method for single hooks

I saw a guy in a video on here using the elastic thread from walmart and it works great. Better have something to cut the bait off if you want to re-bait, once it soaks you can't sling it off. It still is nasty stuff and gets all over the carpet. I think "catfish reaper" is better and much less mess.

LOL, isn't making the boat a mess what catfishing is all about? If i come home from catfishing and the boat isn't slimy, bloody, muddy and just a plain 'ol mess, i dont feel right. Same with me, if i aint bloody, slimy, muddy and all cut up, it was probably a slow day.
