Welcome to the BOC! A baitwell is to keep your live bait in. A livewell is to keep the fish you catch alive; it's often, but not always, larger than a baitwell. In either case, to make one out of a cooler, you use a 12v bilge pump, preferably 500gph or larger. With the bilge pump setting on the bottom of the cooler, attach pvc pipe to it so that the other end of the pipe runs from one end of the cooler to the other end, and is then capped off. This section should be just under the lid of the cooler. Drill some small holes in the bottom of that section of the pipe so that water will squirt from them back down onto the surface of the water in the cooler. This will both cool the water and put oxygen into it. Hint: don't attach the bilge pump to the battery that starts your outboard or you may find yourself having to pull start it unexpectedly.

    Hermilo,

Welcome to the BOC! You will find a lot of information on home made livewells and baitwells in the member library: http://www.catfish1.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38576

The livewell stuff kicks in on the 3rd post, there are a ton of different ideas that you can use or mix and match. The main differences between a baitwell and livewell are usually size and filtration. A lot of folks won’t bother to filter a livewell if it’s intended for short term use, a baitwell for shad on the other hand requires tons of filtration.

While you are considering options, you might take a look at our sponsors products, in particular Aqua-Lung http://www.catfish1.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=452 and KeepAlive http://www.catfish1.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=455 who both have components that can be retrofitted to a cooler style livewell.
