Hey guys and gals, I am kind of new to the area and am trying to get into catfish fishing. I am really into bass fishing, but have come to realize that bass fishing isn't quite the same in Kansas as it is Wisconsin I live relatively close to Lake Olathe and Gardner Lake and also any of the city ponds. I was wondering if any of you had any tips on where to go and what to use around here for a beginner catfisherman? I am also trying to get my wife into it, so the plan right now is more quantity than quality so that she stays interested. The more we catch the funner it will be for her. Oh the other thing is that I don't have a boat and will be fishing from shore, any tips? Thanks!

Bobby, Welcome to the BOC!! The best site on the net!! I live in Olathe so you get some more post in an I will help you out some more.

If you just wanting action then I would try Chicken livers as dip/stink bait I like the liver better because I use it on a kahle hook and you get to let most of the fish go that way. Also you might try nightcrawlers.

Using a treble hook alot of the fish might be gut hooked. Both of those lake Oathe and Gardner have alot of cats in there so either will work an you should catch fish. I would try casting farther out during the day and closer to the bank at night.

    Hope this helps

Welcome to BOC. Be careful on I-35 (Johnson County), the lanes are wider than on I-70 (wyandotte County) for a reason, lol. I grew up in Johnson County.

The state organization on this site has a lot of good people in it that
are just waiting for any question that you might have about the water
that you might be wanting to fish. Don't be afraid to be specific.
What Shelby said is good information; he's recognized as a channel cat
specialist amongst us. No need to change your rod and reel set up
for right now but you will want to eventually as you meet up with
larger catfish. Glad to have you aboard!

Try to make your first ten posts quickly so the staff will let you send
personal messages to individual fishermen. That way you can talk to
us publically or privately depending on the nature of your questions.
Don't think that what you have to say in the posts has to be important.
They count small talk, too! Jump on the site everyday for a week and
read posts. You'll think of something to say even if it's just "nice fish!".

thanks for the welcome everybody. I didn't end up going out to the lake the other night, well I tried, but it was full of people at every nook and crany.

As for Rice Lake Wisconsin, I am from a place called Minong, about 40 minutes north of Rice Lake. Also about 40 south of Superior. So I am from the North west side of the state.
