Jay, welcome to the BOC/SOC. Be sure to check out the library, a lot of good info in there. I normally hook live perch just behind the dorsal fin. Sometimes through the lips or through the eyes depending on the situation.

Welcome to the BOC Jay! Like 777 says, check the library. This question has been posed quite a few times and is a very good one to ask. Personally, I like to hook my live bait under the dorsal fin.

Slow water or lakes, behind the dorsal fin. Moving water, thru the bottom lip, if you pin both lips the fish has trouble breathing and won't last as long.. Welcome from NE Florida

    Hey Jay
Welcome to the BOC. I'm fairly new here too. Great place! I like to hook live bait just under the dorsal fin, hooked shallow as not to kill the bait. This tends to give the baitfish a more natural swim motion.

    Jay,
Welcome to the BOC from indiana. I think hooking your gills through the lips or dorsal fin will work fine.
