Hi, Craig here from Detroit 'burbs.

Looking to get on the Detroit river for some cats with my son this summer.
I'll likely just lurk for a while - I always learn more when i listen than I do when i'm talking.

    Thanks for the welcome.

It says I have to have 10 posts before I can look at photos?
    I always like photos.
Maybe I'll be a bit more active poster to start with.

What part of the burbs are you in, Craig? I fish the Huron River 3 nights a week, bankfishing late. I talked to the top fisheries guy in the DNR on Monday and he said that the catfish in the Huron are "highly underutilized". Well, I'm definitely doing my part and I'm seeing more numbers on a nightly basis than ever before out there. Big, big channels. No flatheads though, you have to go to the west end of the state for that.

I'm in Westland. Where on the Huron do you go? I've fished the stocked trout at Proud Lake, canoe fished the areas upstream from 23, fished the metro parks up from A2 for smallies along with a few undamed stretches in Ypsi (below the Peninsular dam) and tried for steelhead below Flat Rock so I know most of the access points for the river. I never thought of cats being in the river.

Maybe you could show me around and teach me a thing or two some night.

I'm in Canton. I fish just above the Peninsular damn, about 400 yards upriver on my own little spot on the bank. And oh yeah, there are a loooot of channels. There are full strain muskie as well but you have to go several miles downriver for those, but I do muster up a few pike ever year. The channels are MORE than plentiful. You should let me know when you get some time and we can swing out there for a night. I'm the only one that knows where the spot is so I never have to worry about it being fished out like the damn is. It's like having your own private stock of fish at your disposal.

    Sounds interesting.

I've fished for smallmouth in the river below the dam. First fished there aobut 8 years ago when a friend I worked with who went to EMU showed me around. We would park at the apts. across from the park and wade fish to down around the bend, then walk back on the road on the south side of the river to the parking lot. There were always a lot of sub legal small mouth and a few good fish in there along with the occasional walleye, rock bass, etc. We always just fished C&R for teh smallies.

I went back there a couple of weeks ago with my son. The apts have all been upgraded, but the river and the fish were about the same.

I have never fished the impoundment above the dam.
