I would like to start off with saying this site is great!

Well, I am new to cat fishing in general and am looking forward to learning a thing or two from everyone.

I reside is Western WI - fishing the Mississippi. I went out cat fishing last night for 2-3 hours, here are my results:

    My first channel cat:

    Different location, my cousin's catch:

And a broken pole (old) on a snag:

Now, I have a couple questions on my gear (not sure if this is the right place to ask - but it's my first post, so I'll ask anyway!)

I ordered the following from Bass Pro:
    Poles:
    http://tinyurl.com/r4wuwj
    One - UCCA110170
    One - UCCA110280

    Reel:
    http://tinyurl.com/qcptso
    One - 209M

I am in need of another reel and am thinking of purchasing the Abu Garcia C3 Reel 5500 or Abu Garcia C3 Reel 6500 (http://tinyurl.com/yvyqfl).

What reel should I purchase? Any other suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the BOC Brian. As far as the gear is concerned, everyone has their preferences and price ranges and they pretty much all catch fish. The Abu's are hard to beat for the money.

Real nice channel for your first one. Sure your hooked now. Gear is relative... relative to what your fishing for... relative to how much you have to spend... never pass up a swap meet or garage sell. I've got lots of good gear that came free or cheap.

Im a big fan of the quantum Big Cat series. 7' 10" heavy acyion with quantum blue runner reels BTR 30's. And welcome to the BOC from mighty MO go mizzou! Those setups handle everything well, a little heavy for pond fishing, but better to be over gunned for those monsters that will inevitably hit on the smallest rod in the boat!!

You are SOOO RIGHT!! It happened to me a few times last season so I stopped fishing with light rigs. However I bought the new lady freind a medium rod and reel and we went out last night. I had 3 heavy rigs out and she had the medium rig with 10 pd test. Geuss who got the only bite. It stole her bait. I rebaited her and got it right back out. She got a thump.. set the hook like an expert (I was so proud) then it was bbzzzzzzzzzzzzzz pop! Damn I knew I should have put better line on that pole!
