    Hey folks,
I'm currently in Iraq but I just got orders to FT Riley. I'm kinda a noob at this catfishing thing, I grew up in Oregon and Washington so I'm mostly a salmon, steelhead, trout guy. However, I am an equal opportunity fisherman and after viewing some of your pictures, I think I got the catfish bug. I've been stationed in Germany for the last 3 years, plus a year in this glorious sandbox, so needless to say my fishing opportunities have been limited. I'm eager to rectify that.
Anyways, I was just wondering if you guys could give me a little info on what type of gear I might want to start stockpiling. Also, I've got two kids that are already turning into fanatic fishermen, so any info on good places to take the little guys around FT Riley would also be appreciated.

Thanks, and I'll see you all in a couple months!

Nice to hear from ya. Nice post. Good luck with these guys on here. They'll tell even if ya don't ask. Some of 'em are full of BS but what do ya expect, they are fishermen. The women are more honest.

Welcome home when you get here. John.

PS Gonna change that zero in your info column to something else magically. Wal-la.

Don't know why but you are still showing a zero in your Mojave power. Hope it can be rectified. Nice to see a anyhow.

Equipment? You may already have it. Salmon grade tackle is close to what
we look for in the high-end catfish tackle. That's tackle for trophies or
sometimes just for the guys that swear they are going to bring in the next
one if they have to use rope and a pool cue. The major difference that
I have seen is that the moment they put "salmon" on the tackle it costs
about three times as much. They've kept the prices down for us common
folk. Catfish types tend to be inventive and catfish are not line shy or
particularly picky about what they eat. Sometimes we catch them on
artificial lures so the answer isn't always something dead and stinking.
Best combo? Lots of discussion in that area. Often mentioned:
Ambassedeur 6500c baitcasting reel, Ugly Stick Catfish Rod (at least
7ft, two peice), and Power Pro 40lb mainline. Look through the salmon
tackle first, though. Usually that's more than sufficient to begin with.
