I just acquired a 7 mm magnum and a 243 both of them bolt actions. I've never had a rifle as powerfull as that 7mm. What is it's limitations and what game will it take the cartridge makes it look like you could shoot the moon but I know they all have limitations
the 7 mag will take anything in this country, and if your scope holds zero you can shoot waaaay out there. personally i think it's too much for deer, but that's just my opinion. deer i have seen shot with that round were mangled. one thing's for sure- it will smack a deer flat.
I'm assuming it's a 7mm Rem Mag.. ?? Started it career in 1962 I think..
IMO a Great caliber,, I've used one for awhile.. have killed jackrabbits, antelope, deer, and elk with it..
Seems adequate for all of those!!
I load 160 Nosler Partitions or Barnes X copper bullets in the 160 weight..
There are many different bullet weights available.. but, for my uses, game choices, and potential ranges,, The heavier bullets have always worked better for me in this caliber..
175 Grain weight bullets are a good choice as well..
Since you also got the .243 , you have a great selection of calibers for everything from varmints to big game..Killed my first mule deer with a .243 handload way back when..
Congrats on your new acquisitions!!!
7 mag is more suited for elk and really long shots on big western mulies , Dont under estimate the 243 loaded with good 100 gr softpoints , its a 300 yd deer gun.
I have both as well. I use the 7mag. on bear and elk and on deer when our deer/elk season overlaps (Idaho). Its a little heavy handed on deer but if you pick your shots and hit behind the shoulder without hitting any big bones its is quite acceptable. Hit the shoulder bone and it can be messy. I have also used it on antelope and it shines on the longer shots.
I KNOW THAT THE 7 MAG WILL GO THROUGH A FLOORBOARD,BELL HOUSING , AND TORQE CONVERTER , MY COUSIN DID IT WITH TH VERY SAME RIFLE. IT ALSO HAS A 6X18 POWER SCOPE ON IT BUSHNELL BANNER WITH WHAT LOOKS LIKE YARDAGE MARKINGS ON THE FORWARD END WHICH IS ADJUSTABLE BUT I DONT KNOW IF IT CHANGES THE ELEVATION OR JUST USED AS A FOCUS .
The 7mm Will shatter and deers bone and ruin the meat in about a 6-12 inch radius from the wound....My friends Uncle gots a 7mm Rem Mag...and he Rolled a deer at 400yds and it totally shattered the front leg...and broke the bone....But the .243 will drop most any deer at 300yds or less.
Use a good quality bullet and that 7 mag won't tear up alot of meat. Use a cheap bullet and it's like a bomb going off inside the deer. Also the 243 will cleanly down a deer. I shoot hand loads Barnes tripple x bullets in a 325wsm for bear, I shot 2 deer with it last year and neither was ruined by that big gun. It's all about bullet construction and shot placement.

sounds like its an AO scope meaning you can ajust the objective. just because the 7mm can kill at long distance doesn't mean anyone can do it though, without practice at least, know your limitations, that said the 7mm rem mag is a very accurate and flat shooting round, only thing i dont like about them is the price of good ammo.

this is why i mostly use 30-30,about as cheap as it gets, last time i bought some i think it was 15 bucks for remington core lock, compared to 7mm rem mag winchester silver tips $45:angry: spent $90 just getting it dialed in, thinking about trying the leverolution ammo $20 and then i'll have a 300yrd 30-30

You should pick up one of those cheap laser bore sighters from walmart, I bought one for around $40, REALLY cuts down on the ammo you waste getting your scope sighted in, I can usually get a good scope sighted in to where I want it in around 5 rds using that bore sighter.
