Yup. You can call me a fair weather fisherman if you like but I've never fished ice out.
All I know about it is its cold, you really don't want to get wet and dead shad are good bait.
So what else do I need to know?

here cats will push way up into the bays and creeks much earlier than most think. they will also be very touchy about feeling your pole, so you will need to deal with that too.

I would keep an eye on wind direction too. Which ever bank the wind is pushing the winter kill shad toward, that is where the fish should be.

I had to get a good spinning reel outfit for Ice out fishing when I lived in Iowa and was catfishing up there. The water would freeze in the lever wind guide on my reels and it would really mess things up. The spinning reel did not freeze up like that and worked great. But like the other guys said fish the wind blown bank and your set. I caught some nice cats doing that.
