I have a 1989 40 hp 4 cyl Mercury Out board motor. The charging system don't seem to be working. I check the fuse under the motor cover. It checks out ok.Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong.

Could be the rectifier diode is burned up, could be several things.

Buy the shop manual for your motor and it'll have a full section on troubleshooting the electrical system, with step-by-step instructions on checking it out so you know what's wrong.

You can get the manual at just about any boat service/dealer shop or you can buy it online - the one you want is the Clymer guide.

If you're not mechanically inclined, it's probably best to just take it to a shop and have them work on it. But if you can change the oil in your car and follow directions, you can probably work on your motor just fine.
