Ok so I got this link http://www.lakeonline.com/fishinhole/catfish-bait-recipes.html from some where on this site awhile ago but I can't decide on which one to make for the first time. Has anyone tried to make any of these and if so which one is the best? Thanks in advance !
Start with what commerical catfshermen use: cheese and soybeans. Go from there. I think they call it Power Bait.
I believe making bait involes three primary factors: bite stimulation, scent/attractants and texture. Each ingredient has to serve one or more of these functions, kind of a trifecta.
I am just going to come up with my own. Going to start with basic cheese recipe and use carp instead of shad. Going to split it and use cat tails for filler with half and dog fur with other half.
Two of my dogs she's a lot, figured it to be perfect filler for punch bait, but not sure if there will be any adverse sent that would drive away catfish. We all know that cats don't like dogs. Lol
Personally I think adding fish to a doughbait, dip or punch, isn't necessary. Doing so takes a bait that is excellent by itself, fish, and just takes it through an unnecessary step. Taking cheese, blood, anise, etc and adding them to dough bait you're taking something that can't be fished alone and using the doughbait to carry the scent.
Fish oil is easy to make and very potent in the odor department, maybe too much. When I was younger and more adventurous we made it by packing quart Mason jars with fish. More often then not we used black perch, aka green sunfish, cut in to chunks and packed in the jar. After a week or two on a fence post in the sun you would get a mixture of decaying fish flesh and a yellow oil. The oil was strong enough to draw from the next state.
I'm looking to catch some big cats but don't know if I am wanting to smell something that bad todo it. My fishing partner has a weak stomach and so do I when I see some one else throw up! But I have not had any luck at all this year so this might be tried especially with the winter months coming looking todo some cat fish in the cold this year
You know Tom Secret 7 and Sonny's are very effective at times and not that expensive. If you don't want a dip bait there are punch baits available also.
I'm not knocking making your own, it's kind of like fly fishermen where some tie their own and some don't. The difference usually is in the challenge and not in the effectiveness.
If you aren't quite sure about concentrated odors then a proven commercial mix might be a better place to start.
Don't get hung up on "I tried one and it didn't work" because it seems when one doesn't another will. Sometimes they will even outfish fish for bait. You just don't know until you try the.

If BIG cats is what your after, fresh cut bait generally produces bigger cats than stink baits. As far as homemade bait is concerned, I've made one that worked pretty well for me with 3 parts cheese, 1/2 part pork liver, 1/2 part shad and a little anise oil. sit until "ripe" usually around here it takes about 3-4 weeks in the heat of summer. This time of year with the colder temps and it doesn't get "ripe"
Ok I'll have to save that and try it next summer then because were I'm at it's getting chilly and don't think it will "ripe" either. What kind of cheese do you use ? Just like a block of cheese you by at the grocery store ? Or is there a certain kind

you are partly correct most commercial fisher use what is called cheese scraps as well as do most cheese Bait makers like my self, i buy 3 55gallon drums at a time. the shipping cost me more then the bait does
the Power bait your talking about is made by a net company i can't recall the name they take cheese scraps and soybean flakes press then and bake it in to a hard brick it then can be use for baiting holds as it breaks down much better then rang cubes put in cum sacks or in hoop nets for commercial fishermen. there resin they like it is that the soybean flakes drew in the bat fish can then larger fish will fallow.
Most of that stuff will go my nephew. I hardly ever fish for channel cats. My nephew dies a lot. If it works for him, then he can buy more and tell his friends.
There is a great product called secret 7 can be found on amazon great dough bait I have heard of homeade bait made with hotdogs cherry coolaid and crushed garlic tried it not impressed I only have used it in a river never tried lake think it is for channels
