Need advice please

Recently bought a new (to me) 2010 Lowe Skorpion. First boat I have owned in a good 30 years and being retired need to try and do some things on my own to save a buck or two. I am not that mechanically inclined but willing to try.

My issue is that last time out after loading up and pulling off the ramp to staging area I could hear a whining buzzing noise, turns out the starter is happily spinning away and hot as heck. Pulled positive cable from battery to end that.

The key was in off position and this was still happening. Is my issue the solenoid or the ignition switch....possibly both? And I am worried if the starter having run for good 10 minutes at the ramp and probably that long coming off of the lake might be needing replaced? Starter still works but maybe degraded the brushes?

Whoops, sounds like something in starter is getting a constant power.

Unhook the pos. At starter, turn key off, see if it still has power at cable end. If not its in the starter end. If so you got other issues.

Work it backwards
Reconnect the cable to the battery
If starter spins like before, disconnect battery and remove energizer wire from switch.
Reconnect battery cable
If starter doesn’t spin it’s probably the switch
If starter spins probably the solenoid.
—————————
If starter doesn’t spin when cable from solenoid is connected to battery, eliminate switch and solenoid by quickly touching a cable between battery directly to starter.
If starter doesn’t spin, it’s probably gone bad.
When the starter was spinning, it, the solenoid and possibly the switch wiring would have got hot. Once it cools it may not behave like it did when it was spinning by itself.
Hope I haven’t confused you too much. It’s all pretty straightforward, just have to take it a step at a time.

Thank you metalman for the advice. A friend brought over his multi meter and we could not find any issues. I have started the motor multiple times the last couple of days and let it run a bit then shut off with no re occurrence of the starter motor still running while ignition is in run position or off. Maybe just a one time thing but I think I am going to invest in a perko switch to shut the battery down so the next time something goes haywire I dont have to struggle around trying to get the cable off of the battery

Good advice from all above. I’m chiming in late. But like you it’s been 25 years since I had a boat and then it was new and I had someone to do the service work. Now I’m retired on a fixed $. Bought an older boat with a 40hp Yamaha. Did all the work myself.
If you have any other issues this is the place to come. I rebuilt all three carburetors on mine learned how to link and sync and troubleshoot. Then the cooling system. I used an ir gun to check the temperature of the head until I got everything right. I found out just because water is coming out of the tell tail don’t mean everything is hunky dory. I don’t know what size motor you have but if you don’t have a tachometer I recommend a tiny Tach. Mine is Velcro to my tiller handle. This came up when I was shopping for a prop.
Enough about mine. Congratulations on yours and enjoy it.
I’m just offering to help anyway I can because of all the help I received and the knowledge I now have.
