Take a look at Shakespeare's "Ugly Stik" rods.

My Sugestion for a rod for a river would be an Ugly Stik Tiger in M/H. They cost $55.00 dollars at Bass Pro. It will last you a LIFETIME with proper care. Fishing gear is just like tools you get what you pay for. Now I'm not trying to be a smartallic or anything like that But I Know if you can swing that amount you will be more than satisfied with your purchase JMHO. Your Frind From Iowa J.D.Straka

How big of a river and would it be from shore plz?

For the big cats 10-11' Surf Rods work very well for me on the Ohio River. They have tons of advantages with the only disadvantage beening the space they need. I've never had a problem with a 2 piece rod
