I have used smelt, not my favorite but sometimes can add a change up if needed. Need- smelt, wire, leader W/treble.
Take the wire, i use a piece of copper #14 gauge, but any small size wire will do. Bend copper wire around the loop in leader, make sure to close loop and make the loop small. Now take a smelt and insert the non loop side of wire into fish at tail end. Push the wire all the way through fish until you come out of the mouth. Pull treble up to fish and unhook the wire from loop, hook onto line. This makes it easy to cast and for drift fishing keeps the bait straight. Sorry if this sounds confusing.
