In the fall of 1987 I was striper fishing on Lake Norman at the mouth of Little Creek and every time I passed over a deep hole I kept marking something on the bottom. I hover over the area and dropped a large shiner down and the rod bent and them came back up. I pulled the bait up to check it and found that something had smashed it big time. I re-baited and dropped it down again and the same thing happen. The next time I set the reel on free spool with the clicker on. This time I connected and I had me a 7.5 pound flathead. It was my first flathead and my largest cat to date (1987). Prior to that date all I had caught on LKN were channel cats and small blues. From that point on, striper fishing took a back seat to the mighty catfish.
