Thanks BOC brothers and sisters! I went fishing lastnight and hooked up with my first ever flatheads! Nothing huge but I think you got to craw before you walk.
Fished the laydown that was a topic in another post I posted and using the information you all suggested I caught some flats and had a great time.
I attached some pics. if you want to see what I caught. You will notice the home made slip bobber form noodles and 3/4" PVC pipe and end caps, they work great! (another BOC treasure)
And no mud turtles do not care if that fresh live gill is for catfish only.
    All were CPR'ed.
Can you eat flatheads? Think I might stick with channels in the frying pan!

don't know much about how flatties taste ,but that turtle would have been a good candidate for the frying pan. congrats on your catches hope to see you get a bunch more

Yep, if you want to be able to catch 3 footers in a few years, letting them go back into the river and not into a frying pan is suggested.

    Eat Bass!:cool2:

Oh Yeah!! Flatheads in my book are the best eating catfish there is!! Hands down!! They mostly eat live bait and I think this accounts to the better quality taste of the fish. I tried my 1st Flathead this year and I was sold on the quality of the fish. Very good fish. Better than Walleye. To me yes. To others? maybe.. But I sure love this fish.. Channels are great eating too. I always trim off the yellowish fat, before frying them up. To me that the best way to enjoy the quality of the meat. Just remember white meat. And I always like to trim the tail off and let them bleed out before cleaning them. To me this give the best quality meat and shows up nice and white when done cleaning them.

nice flatties and congrats on the catch and the nice pics!!

    Just a tip!!
    Mark..

Congratulations on your first flatheads! Did you catch them at night? Flatheads are excellent tablefare, but remember that selective harvest is the only way we can preserve great fishing for the future. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR NEXT TRIP!

They taste very good! When you fillet them they basically have two fillets on their back and tail section. The larger flats have a very tasty slab of meat on their bellies (and that is the best part of a flathead).
