This has been a tough year for fishing but that was all erased Sunday morning. New work promtions, new home, and all this stinking rain and wind kept me from fishing the usual amount. My local lakes and rivers don't have a useable ramp but I have a little 250 acre city lake that only has a spillway. The water never gets too high and there some real trophy flatheads in that lake. The lake really doesn't get targeted for catfish it's mainly a bass and crappie lake and no setlines are allowed. I still like to setline but it's nice to have place to really target a monster.

I didn't look like it was going to be a good night. I had a dozen perch but wanted to catch a decent amount of shad since I have great luck with fresh cut shad on flatheads also. My second cast my net caught a underwater tree and lost my net.:embarassed: Anyway I set up five rods two with slip floats and three with carolina rig. After four hours I didn't even have a nibble then one bend of the rod and I had a 4 pound channel. Twenty minutes passed and I think I caught his brother another 4 pound channel. Then the waiting game again........4 hours past and four different spots and not even a nibble. I had a 6 inch perch suspended on a large slip float in about 4 feet a water really close to shore. My float disappered and the fight was on. I don't think it lasted at lot more than five minutes. I had 65 pound power pro with a 30 pound mono leader so I wasn't too afraid of losing him.

I knew it was a large fish but it's been a while since I caught a flathead this big. When I moved back to Oklahoma 7 years ago I caught a 52.5 pound flathead. Since that time I''ve caught a lot in the twenties and some in the thirties but none over 40 since 01. My regular scale, the batteries went dead so I used the 150 pound spring scale. 50 pounds even.....great way to start Father's Day.:big_smile:

Nice flathead. Too bad you didn't catch his brother like you did that channel cat's brother.

I bet that fish made you forget all about that lost net!

Very impressive fish. Isn't it amazing how a ho-hum night of fishiing can turn into greatness in a matter of seconds? Sounds like you had a busy year, glad to see you kick back and tie into a good one. My hat is off to you.
