Caught this little Mud Puppy this morning, man them things are ugly!!
Thanks for the pic , I haven't seen a mudpuppy or hellbender as some call them in years.
They make good bait!
Very cool! If you use them for bait hook em threw threw the mouth so they can't chew on your line. Also they make a cool low maintains pet for kids. Always Wash your hands after handling.
They make good cut bait. I've never tried them whole.
Man, wish I could get em here. Years ago was fishing with what we call waterdogs ( not available here anymore ) and a guy drives up and as we are talking I reeled in and he saw my bait an said, "Oh, your fishing with mud puppies!". I had never heard the term before. Thanks for reminding me what they looked like.
i have'nt seen one in 20 yrs. or so myself.
They the ones that flare out their gills?
Looks like something outta Science Fiction, thanks for sharing.
I have a couple spots where I can net them, they make good bait! But that one in the pic looks like a juvinile spotted salamander, you have to be carefull as some are endangered and the salamanders have those gills when young too.
we call them waterdogs, tiger salamander larva find them in stock ponds. selling for $15.00 per dozen around here.
use to catch them when I was a kid , don't see many out west. Kinda neat:cool2: LDJ
Man they are ugly. I caught a big on by hand. I was trout fishing and went to pull my stringer out of the water and a big mudpuppy had a 3/4s of a keeper rainbow stuffed in it's mouth. It shocked the crap out of me when I saw that sucker.
ive heard they make good bait also....better for channels or flats? ide like to give it a try someday...
