Fished from 8 AM to 5 PM. Caught 8 Blues on herring drifting or trolling. 23,21,19,18,15,15,5,5 lbs. Water was as slick as glass with a little breeze after 12:00. Bite was very slow and weak. Fished from 20 -50 feet. All fish were caught in 38-46 feet. Fish were shallower in the morning and then went back deep as the day went on. Water temp was 40-45. All fish were chubby and fat. Stuffed with threadfin. Even the birds are fat. 1st fish of the new year so we had fun.

Good report. Our day was much the same. The fish bit REAL weak. We ended up with 16, 15 blues and one flattie, with a big fish of 20.2, a 15, 13, 12, several 10s and 7 under ten for the frying pan. All the fish we caught were on gizzard shad, but as you stated, they all puked up threadfin. They were bloated from threadfin. Really a weird day the way they bit. Water temp was 40 where we were, and fish were caught at 30 feet.

Nice report Bill. 16 isn't bad at all. Nice on the flattie too. Hard to catch them this time of year. It was kind of a weird day. No wind. Slow bite. They just wanted to peck at it for awhile before they took it. If they took it at all. Do you think the threadfin are done dying off or still dying off?

nice fish. we have plenty of pics of that pelican... usually toss it bait or whatever when it comes around. youll think hes trying to come in the boat with you when he comes flying in

I think they were so full of threadfin, all they could do was peck at the baits. As you stated, it was a weird bite, very uncharacteristic for blues. No idea if the threadfin are done dying off.

I have seen Freddy climb in the boat with me. Practically tame. I've had to run him off several times.

There is literally tons of baitfish out there right now, especially in deep water. On those windless days, just tight line your bait right into the schools of bait until you locate the right depth. :fingers-crossed:
