My father has 1984 50hp evinrude 2 cylinder motor on his 16' sea nymph. He hasnt really taken care of it or taken it out in the last 5 years or so. Lately when we go out it takes a while to get it started and usually take a few times to keep it running. My question is, what type of thing would need to be done to tune this engine up? And are there kits anywhere you can get? When the motor is running it runs great. I would just like to have it more reliable so i can take it out myself without him giving me the excuse of getting it stuck in the river. Thanks in advance. :0a36:

Please change your lower unit oil.

New spark plugs.

And a carb cleaning could make it definately easier to start.

Clean out your gas tank and flush fresh gas through your lines.

That should give you a more reliable engine.

Thanks for the advice, going to try to clean the carb soon. Still dies sometimes while idling. Put new plugs in and ran the tanks all the way empty and put new gas in.

Running your tank dry does not clean it out. Over the yrs, water accumulates and trash particles are in there. Old gas will also create a sludge. All this will void any carb cleaning in a short time.

Totally emptying the tank, wiping it out with paper towels and a long probe will allow a good inspection.

No short cuts allowed or they will bite you in the butt when you least expect it.
