How do you properly measure a shaft to distinguish between long and short shafts? Motors in question is 25hp--40hp Johnson. Thanks.

Mickey there is two ways to determine the length. Take it apart and measure the drive shaft or do it the easy way. I can take the model number off a 1980 or newer johnson or evenrude and tell you from that but if you want a way to easily understand it then just follow the instructions in this picture

Thanks Willard the diagram was what I was looking for. I had looked at a 2002 25 hp johnson and I thought it was a long shaft. His price was to high. He has now dropped the price down but is advertising it as short shaft. I will re check it out. The help is appreciated.
