I got a 50 hp johnson that runs fine, but makes an awful noise sometimes when starting. The noise sounds like a worn belt would make on a car.
It only makes this noise at times when i first start the motor and then goes away.I'm thinking it may be a bad starter or should i possibly be lookin somewhere else?

put some oil on the shaft like coach said and if it goes away you found the problem ok then look at the shaft and see if it is wore funny galled etc. also look at the bendix sin that by hand it should be quiet if it is noisey you can put a new bendix on it. hope it helps

    Thanx for the help guys.

It has been a couple of months since i lubricated that, but it spends alot of time on the water so maybe i need to tend to that more often.First time it made the noise i thought it was going to blow up,scared me good.

Let ya know how i made out.
