Does a 2 stroke motor (85 Merc. 25hp) need a charge from the battery to run? Last time out, I had let the battery go almost completely dead, and by the time the lights ran for a few hours, it was completely dead. The motor would hardly run then, could get it to start, but would not hardly stay running, or rev very hard.

Would the dead battery have anything to do with that? Luckily, it did not start acting up until right in front of the ramp.

That should not have any thing to do with the running. Next time unhook the battery from it and see if ithelps some one may have put a higher amperage charging system on it and it needed all the rpms just to keep the charger going. When you disconnect the batery and hand start that diverts all power to the unit itself.
